Hello Dr. Prasad and all respectable Doctors, I have been having a fungal infection on my head (pictures attached). After doing my research and consulting doctors and a dermatologist, some say it s Scalp folliculitis while others say it s Seborrheic Dermatitis. I have been living with this infection for 5 years and treatments don t seem to help. Fingertip-sized bald patches have appeared due scratching, hair pulling at the affected areas. I get about 5 - 10 pustules on my head daily, redness on scalp, pimple lumps. Treatments tried: CREAMS - Hydrocortisone cream USP2.5%, Fucidin(Antibiotic ointment-Sodium fusidate), Clotrimazole USP 1% - broad specturm antifungal, anti-inflammatory & antipruritic cream and other anti-fungal creams over the years but non have worked. SHAMPOO - Nizoral (KETOCONAZOLE shampoo), SELSUN (2.5% suspension - Selenium Sulfide), CLODERM (Clobetasol Propionate shampoo 0.05% w/w). ORAL-ANTIBIOTICS - Bactrim (CO-Trimoxazole)(1 month course) - 2 tablets, twice a day for 2 weeks, then 1 tablet twice a day for the next 2 weeks. This treatment is the only cure but only temporary, it starts working within the first week and everything clears up. After completing the course of anti-biotics, it starts showing up in 2 weeks. I do take this course when the pain and itching becomes unbearable, 5 - 6 times a year. But this is bad as it s lowering my immune system and it s easy to catch a fever/flu/soar throat when I m on this course. The shampoo s keep it from itching for 6 to 12 hours but once I ve had a meal the itching starts, it feels as if bugs are crawling all around my scalp. It itches, sudden piercing pains and eruptions. After researching my food intake - I noticed sweets (Candy, chocolates) and dairy foods (cheese, milk) causes more breakouts, worse and painful. I don t know what else is to be done. This affects me psychologically to as I tend to stay away from people, avoid communication and confrontation. It stresses me out, I loose focus easily, the pain just distracts me and I go into depression. I do appreciate your thoughts, diagnosis and recovery from this issue. A student working hard to balance with work, university and this infection. Thank you for your time. EMAIL : rajkumard42 (at) peacocks (dot) uiu (dot) edu Warm regards, Rajkumar
