What Causes Behavioral Changes While On Cyproheptadine For Headache And Sensory Problems?

Hello, my 6 yr old son is taking 5ml s of liquid Cyproheptadine at night for headaches & sensory issues. (Also suffers from Tics due to anxiety) He has been taking it since 8/31. My husband & I have not noticed any improvement. What we have noticed is the lack of motivation and he is not as cheerful as he once was. So my question is.....can we stop cold turkey or do we have to ween him off this med? We have noticed behavioral changes that have us concerned. Thank you for your advice in advance. ~Gena

General & Family Physician 's  Response
1. Cyproheptadine causes sedation and mood depression as with all anti allergies.
2. If the behaviour changes are marked, you can stop the drug immediately.
3. For control of head ache and tics, it is suggested to have evaluation by a pediatric neurologist.
