What Causes Behavioural Changes Along With Insomnia In A Child With Hypothyroidism?
Hi, my daughter was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at the age of 4 and she got put on the generic brand of synthroid things were going ok at first then her doctor upped her dose to 50mg this is when things started to get really weird. she couldn t explain what was going on with her body she was always hungry, she gained 12 pounds in 6months. she was having crazy mood swings acting out all the time. it was getting really bad so I took her off the medicine 3 weeks before her follow up with her dr. When we went to see him june 2nd he diagnosed her with hashimotos before even having blood work done and said we needed to get her blood work and see how her levels were and see what we needed to do. he put her on synthroid 37.5mg and she was on for 5 days before the side effects began. she was jittery couldn t sleep constant tossing and turning at night and was just not her self. I called her dr explained what was going on and he said to stop for 2 days and lower the dose to 25mg. and get blood work in 4 weeks. she refused to take the medicine she didn t wanna feel weird anymore. i stopped her medicine a week ago today. The next day she wasn t feeling good and took a nap cuz she was so overtired from not sleeping, when she woke up she was screaming and freaking out saying everything was so far away and was beyond scared, this happens every once in awhile now after waking up. and today she was complaining of her left temple burning whether this is the correct word she was looking for to explain it im not sure her being only 4 1/2 years old. please help! im also in the process of looking for another endocrinologist for a second opinion.
If I were to treat a patient with hypothyroidism i would certainly rely on the blood work and clinical findings. Hypothyroidism certainly leads to weight gain, mood swings and excessive sleepiness and it occurs due to decreased levels of T3 and T4 in the body. Treatment is based on these levels and would require dose adjustment with repeated monitoring.
Hashimotos's thyroiditis is an auto immune disease with complete destruction of thyroid gland, but the age of onset is usually close to puberty and diagnosis is made by the presence of anti-thyroid peroxidaseantibodies (TPOAb) in the serum. Given that your daughter is 4.5 years old it is likely that she has congenital hypothyroidism for which she may need synthetic Thyroxine but with dose regulation. Also, please remember that this needs to be taken regularly and effects will be seen only after a month of continuous usage.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
