Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Black Colored Stool After Taking Pain Medication?
I was just shocked to notice that my bowel movement was all black or dark green! I had a normal bowel movement last night and I m not experiencing any discomfort other than lower back pain which I have been treated for with pain meds; muscle relaxer and muscle inflammation medication for months.
Based on the history you have shared, the black colored stool can be due to Malèna caused by upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding inside as pain medicine may cause stomach inflammation or may trigger peptic ulcer disease.
I suggest taking antacids like Omeprazole before meals alongside as well as getting stool analysis and stool for occult blood.
If bleeding is confirmed, may need upper GI endoscopy too. Blood counts for hemoglobin levels may also be needed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
