What Causes Black Discoloration Under The Tongue Along With Swelling?

My sister had a swollen tonuge and the under side turned black. Her neck and side of her face were swollen and very painful. She put hot packs on it and the pain finally went away also she rinsed her mouth with salt water. What could this have been?

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Swelling of tongue and black discolouration of tongue with swollen side of face can be due to causes like:

-Allergic reaction to any food or medication.

-Infection in tooth or salivary gland.

-Cellulitis etc.

So my suggestion is to not treat it at home as although the symptoms must have got less severe but you should consult an Oral Physician or an Emergency room and get evaluated so that the exact cause is ruled out..

For now she can take anti-allergics like Benadryl to reduce swelling..

Continue doing warm saline gargles..

Hope this helps..

Take care!

Regards.
