Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been diagnosed with step throat and I am currently taking a zpack as treatment. I have been keeping an eye on the white patches on my tonsils since I have not felt any relief as far as irritation goes. My white patches have increased in number and now I have a black patch on my right tonsil. I have never heard of black patches before. Do I need to be concerned about the black patches?
As per your complain black patches on Tonsils are unusual finding. As you are diagnosed with strep throat already, black patches on Tonsils can be due to entrapped debris, secondary yeast infection, blood blisters etc.
But for confirmation, a thorough clinical evaluation and investigation like throat swab culture has to be done to rule out the cause, and treatment can be done accordingly. As of now you can take a course of antibiotics like Azithromycin, anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen, do warm saline gargle and steam inhalation. Avoid spicy and hard foods and sip plenty of warm fluids.
Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Honey Arora
