Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a black spot on the back of my throat, I recently had a fever and sore throat and was prescribed penicillin for strep throat, and I got a call today (after 3 days of taking 3 500mg pills/day) to stop taking them because the throat culture test came back negative. So what is this black spot?
Sometimes, after Strep Pharyngitis a dark area or spot may be seen on the tonsil. It is often detected as secondary to infection and it resolves over time. However, you are suggested to consult an ENT, to confirm if the spot is on the tonsils or at the back of the throat.
If needed the treating doctor will tell you to get a biopsy done to confirm if it is benign or malignant so that your treatment can be started if it is harmful. Stay well hydrated. Take home made food. Avoid addictions if any. Gargle your throat with warm salt water 3-4 times a day.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
