What Causes Black Spots On The Face Freckle And On Arm?

Hi I have freckles on my face and have had since i was young. About 5 days ago i noticed that on one freckle i have 3 little black dots that have appeared out of nowhere. They are about the size of a pencil dot when it has been sharpened to its sharpest. They have not got any bigger since i noticed them. At first i thought that they may be black heads but they are flat & there is no spots in that area. I have tried squeezing them but there was no movement at all, no puss etc. I also have a mole on my arm which now has a new little black area on it which i noticed today. Could the 3 little black spots on my face freckle and the one on my arm mole be telling me something sinister is growing?

Hi,

It seems you are worried that your lesions may turn cancerous. I assume you are not a young person anymore. Were you exposed to a lot of sunlight or tanning beds in your life? Had sunburns? If yes, the change in the moles could be the beginnings of melanoma.

I've seen many cases like yours in my practice and I always suggested to remove these lesions and have them examined under the microscope to rule out cancerous changes. In many cases, these examinations have turned up just changes of the skin with age and as such reassured the patient. But every now and then it was malignant, and removing the lesion early may prevent the spread if it turns out to be skin cancer.

The best specialist to take out these lesions would be a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any follow-up questions.

All the best,
Dr. Christine
