What Causes Black Stool After Hernia Surgery?

My husband had surgery on an unbiblical hernia 9 days ago and the last 2 days his bowel movements has been black and the nurse at the Drs. Office said he needed to be concerned but didn t say why. Can you please answer why he s having black stools and why be concerned? Thank you

Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Appearnace of black stools after hernia surgery could be due to some of the medications used during or after surgery. Usually, it is seen if there is supplementation of iron after surgery to overcome blood loss that could have happened during surgery.
You need not worry much about it as it needs to gradually reduce and the stools should be back to normal colour.
In case it does not subside or there are fresh symptoms developing, you need to seek medical attention immediately.
