Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Black Stool Along With Indigestion And Nausea?
I ve had black stools, heart burn, indigestion and slight nausea (nausea only occasionally) for about a week. Taking pepto or Gas X seems to help symptoms a little except for the black stools. I had a colonoscopy in Oct and it was fine. Any ideas?
If you are not currently taking oral iron supplements, the symptoms you describe are then suggestive of an upper gastro intestinal bleed. Black tarry stools are usually caused by oral iron supplements or from losing blood along your stomach/upper gastrointestinal tract. You can confirm this by sending off a stool sample to test for occult blood. The indigestion, nausea and heartburn also tie in with either a gastritis ( inflammation of the stomach lining) or peptic ulcer disease. This would not have been diagnosed on a colonoscopy. You will need to visit your doctor to schedule an endoscopy which will be able to determine the cause. You can try a course of omeprazole in the mean time while you arrange for an appointment.
Hope this helps.
