What Causes Black Stool, Grayish Vomiting And Upper Abdominal Pain?

My son has black tarry stool and has dark grayish vomit. He has pain in his upper abdomen, eats very little and when he does he feels bloated, sleeps quite a bit throughtout the day, very fatigued, and is very irritable. I should also mention that he takes pepto-bismol for his stomach and self-medicates with Black Velvet.

Hello there. Read your query and noted the contents. Pain in the upper abdomen is a sign of gastritis. Pepto bismol which as bismuth when in contact with saliva forms bismuth sulphide and that is why he has black stools with greyish vomit. However dark stools can also occur when there is gastro intestinal bleeding. How old is he? There are plenty of other medications available to treat gastritis. May I advise a change? Do you have any reports that you could share? Wishing him good health. Take care.
