Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Yes, my husband has been experiencing bleeding when he has a bowel movement. At first it was just a little bit of blood, now it is quite a bit more. He has been using Preparation H, but he says it s not a hemorrhoid on the outside. Could it be one on the inside or a tear in his anal lining? Should he go to the hospital or make a doctors appointment?
If the blood he is having with his bowel movements is bright red, then it is likely from internal hemorrhoids, which can often bleed more than hemorrhoids that are outside the anus.
As long as the bleeding stops in between bowel movements, and he is not feeling lightheaded or weak, he should be able to wait to make it to a doctor's appointment. In the meantime, in addition to the Preparation H, he can use laxatives like Miralax or docusate to keep his stool soft so that he doesn't make the hemorrhoids worse by straining.
Sitz baths, for which they sell kits at the pharmacy, can also help relax muscle tone and this may help with the bleeding as well.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch,
General & Family Physician
