What Causes Bleeding During Urination?

Hello, My Mother is 77 years old and told me that a few nights ago she got up to use the restroom and she bled a lot as she urinated, even passing clots. She said she went a few times that night. She went to her Doctor and they tested her urine and she was told she had a bad UTI and was given antibiotics. Can a UTI cause that much bleeding?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Yes UTI can lead to such kind of bleeding during urination. Regular urination and emptying of bladder once in 3 hours irrespective of the urge to urinate. Before sleeping in night it is important to urinate twice in a gap of 5 minutes and empty the bladder. If she does not have any fluid restrictions 2 liters of water per day is advised. These steps followed will help to avoid and control UTIs in future.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Jasmine Jagan
