What Causes Bleeding From Urethra After Drinking Magnesium Citrate?

About two weeks ago I drank magnesium citrate to relieve constipation. When I have my first bowl movement from the citrate I strained a lot. After about the third BM I noticed blood when I wiped coming from where I urinate. My doctor ruled out a UTI and did a pelvic exam and everything was normal. Tomorrow I have a CT and bladder ultrasound. What could be wrong with me?

Hello,

The possible reason for blood from the urethra is a side effect of magnesium citrate which has caused dysuria and altered urine pH. Recommended to consume plenty of liquids, discontinue magnesium citrate for better recovery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
