Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son has been diagnosed with some bleeders in the small intestine and a specific procedure is being recommended using either a single balloon and the double balloon. He has been told there is only one doctor in San Antonio, Texas that does this procedure and they use the single balloon. What is the difference between the single balloon and the double balloon procedure and is there an advantage of one over the other?
Your child problem is small bowel bleed which is difficult do diagnose with upper GI endoscopy or colonoscopy. Since it is a blind area for endoscopes which can be seen by balloon endoscopy or video capsule endoscopy.
Cause of this bleed can be ulcer in small bowel, polyp, carcinoma, diveticulum, infection, vascular anomalies or bleeding disorders which can be managed by balloon assisted enteroscopy only. Otherwise, the child can loose blood and can land up in anemia or other problems. So it is better to get that endoscopy, and get appropriate management to stop bleeding.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Tata Lokesh Kumar, General Surgeon
