What Causes Bleeding Post Vaginal Intercourse?

I have not had sex in 5 years. I am 66 years old and had a total hysterectomy at around age 52. Two weeks ago when I had sex it hurt and I had bright red bleeding. What could have caused that? That never happened before. I have only been with my husband before and I am not engaged.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I have read your description and understand your concern.
The reason why you could have bleeding after vaginal intercourse could be due to mucosal injury. This is seen in post-menopausal women and often due to improper lubrication and dryness of vagina.
Kindly wash the area with cold water and mild antiseptic solution like Savlon twice daily to prevent infection. You can apply Neomycin cream after drying. Apply moisturizer cream at bedtime.
Next time, kindly take care to be gentle and use moisturizer cream or water-based lubricants during the act.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
