Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
5 times in the past year I have had the following occur: The corners of my lips and the tops of my bottom lip become highly sensitive and break down. The only thing I've found that helps is Vit. E applied topically. I am getting nervous that this may be a symptom of something I should be paying attention to.
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain it seems that the breakouts at the corners of lips along with lower lip can be most probably due to Herpes virus infection causing cold sores that has a tendency to cause recurring breakouts on the lips..
I would therefore suggest you to consult a Skin specialist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like antigen antibody reaction, viral culture, polymerase chain reaction etc can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.. You can be advised oral antiviral medications like Acyclovir, Valacyclovir etc to be taken for long term along with topical application of antiviral ointments to reduce viral count..
You should also keep your personal belongings like towels, napkins etc separate and avoid intimate contacts when there is a breakout as the infection is contagious and can spread to other individuals..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
