Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
If I have blood and mucus looking stuff in my explosive or running stools, what could it mean? I have had this diarrhea close to three months. I have seen a specialist, and after different stool samples, a colonoscopy is next. They will be taking a biopsy of the intestines. Could this be cancer? Or just some form of colis/
Hi, Blood and Mucos in stools could be an infection, or something we call an inflammatory bowel disease or ultimately cancer. It is unlikely to be an infection because it is 3 months and its too long for an infection to go such long without deterioration. So we are left with 2 things now. One is inflammatory bowel disease (Crohns disease or ulcerative colitis). This causes bleeding and mucus but is most often (but not always) associated with discomfort or pain. The second one is cancer which causes painless bleeding occurs but mucus is not very common as in IBDs. So Clinically if you ask me, I will first think of you suffering from an IBD and if proven otherwise only, then I think of Cancer. So be reassured and lets hope for the best.
Regards Dr. Jeffrey
