What Causes Blood Clots In The Thighs After A Knee Replacement Surgery?

I was diagnosed with two blood clots in my thigh after having knee replacement surgery and an emergency femoral bypass right after that. I am on Xeralto 20mg. This happened end of Feb. I started getting a rash on my calf last week. It s driving me nuts. Could the rash be caused by the compression socks? I put bag baum on the rash site at night but it is not helping.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

After orthopedic surgeries, especially knee replacements, there is an increased risk of vein thrombosis due to blood stasis, rest, and immobilization.

Deep vein thrombosis or so called DVT may be serious and blood thinners should be taken for at least 4 months after surgery. Thrombosis means that clot is formed inside the big leg vessel. So, you need to do Doppler ultrasound to rule this out.

Rash may be caused by compression socks but also, it may be a sign of venous dermatitis which is commonly seen after long-standing DVT. It may also cause lividity of the skin.

You can apply Betrion ointment or SynOpen cream on the rash and see if this will help. Also, it is important to move as much as possible and avoid long sitting and standing.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
