What Causes Blood Discharge From Knot Around Stitches?

I had srugery done on my hip a couple weeks ago and my hip bruised really bad. Around one of the sets of stiches I had a big knot. I pushed on the knot and almost blackish blood came oozing out. I was wondering if it could be where the blood had collected under my skin and just pooled in that area? Should I be worried?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* The blood discharge from the knot around stitches indicates infection of the subcutaneous tissue with gram positive bacteria as staph aureus or epidermidis at the suture piercing site.

My guidelines at present

- keep the part clean with antiseptic liquid or soap
- sterile dressing with neosporin skin cream
- prescription of antibiotics as amoxycillin with clavulanic acid or linezolid as per the choice of your surgeon or available culture swab report of the discharge material.Get well soon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
