Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Blood Drainage During A Bowel Movement?
My son was admitted to the hospital today. The doctor s say he has a very low red blood cell count. He was extremely pale. He has complained of blood in his stool. The doctor s speculate that he is bleeding internally - from somewhere. They may do a lower GI examination. May be too early to tell but could this possibly be something more serious than an ulcer let s say?
Hi, thank you for your question. Please rate my answer if you are satisfied. There could be a number of causes for blood in stool. Hepatitis, intestinal infections, worm infestation, crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis to name some of the common ones. Your son needs a work up to find out the cause of his bleeding. He might need some blood tests, stool examination and abdominal ultrasound, and of course the lower GI exam. If the source of bleeding is in upper GI tract you usually don't see blood in the stool rather you see dark black stools, if the source is in the lower GI tract only then you see actual blood in stools. In any case, don't worry because it's all treatable. But after that your son might need some extra iron.
