What Causes Blood In Phlegm?

hi, i ve had a sore throat for about 2 days now and last night i went to sleep with my fan on & when i woke up my throat was sore again & i coughed up a chunk of phlegm with a bit of blood in it only a very small amount but still enough to scare me it hasn t happened again although i have been coughing up smaller amounts of phlegm through the day. I am a chronic asthmatic & normally get cold / flu when the cold weather hits like it has in the last few weeks. I normally just assume its a cold again but obviously got a bit worried about the blood. I ve been told its from me sleeping with my mouth open & the fan on it irritated my throat causing it but just wanted to make sure?

Hello,

Your symptoms are suggestive of upper airway irritation. Anyway, if the blood in the phlegm persists, I recommend consulting with your attending physician for a physical exam, a chest CT scan and some blood lab tests (complete blood count, PCR,ESR, etc.).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka
