What Causes Blood In Sputum After An Appendectomy?

Is it normal to cough up blood after intubation from appendectomy? I had the surgery about 26 hours ago and was discharged a few hits ago. After brushing my teeth, I felt like something was stuck in my throat and coughed up some bright red blood mixed in phlegm. It feels like there s a bit of something stuck in my throat. I called the hospital s patient advisory line who said it is normal. Do you agree?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is normal. Your surgery was done under general anesthesia for which intubation was done (a tube put in the windpipe). Mild bleed occurs due to micro injuries which are coughed up.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
