What Causes Blood In Stool After Taking Dicyclomine And Loperamide?
My son is taking the medication s Dicyclomine and loperamide and is having frequent stools and at times has bright red blood with blood clots in his stools. should he be taking these medications? What else should he be doing to correct this problem? THANK YOU
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history about your son taking Dicyclomin and Loperamide for frequent stools, has bright red blood in stools, wants to know whether to take these medicines and what else needs to be done to correct this problem.... Since there is a problem of loose stool/ diarrhea for which your son is taking the medication, the entero-colitis must have been the reason for the bleeding in stools. The Loperamide can reduce the motility and Dicyclomin acts as anti-spasmodic. These medicine are not known to cause to the bleeding in stool. Take a course of an antibiotic, metronidazole, probiotic and you may be fine. Also send stool and blood for tests for getting better idea about what is the possible diagnosis. Take plenty of water, liquids to keep hydrated and electrolyte solution to keep a proper balance of electrolytes. Take soft and bland diet and add on PPI like Omeprazole.
