Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, my name is Amy and I am 44 years old. I have been having trouble with bowel movements (not able to and when I do, it is quite a struggle) and recently have had blood in my stool. The pain in my stomach has been quite uncomfortable. Do you think I should have a colonoscopy? Thanks
Constipation and blood in stool at the age surely needs to be seen with precaution. The blood in the stool can be due to hemorrhoids or fissure in ano secondary to hard stool and straining at stool. Hence first of all consult a General Surgeon for per-rectal digital examination and ano-proctoscopy to know if there is any reason for blood in stool. Get treated accordingly with laxatives, stool softeners. Sitz bath in a tub with warm water. Changes in diet to increase fibers and the foods which do not cause constipation. If this does not help much then take an appointment for colonoscopy and biopsy as you are 44 years old. This will give better diagnosis by confirming or ruling out the diseases related to constipation and blood in stool.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. T Chandrakant, General Surgeon
