Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
If this is the first episode you notice blood while wiping or in the toilet I would say there is no need to worry at the moment, The most common cause for it is hemorroids. If you have hard stools they might scratch the veins in the
rectum (last part of the big bowel) and cause some bleeding so it is important to do things to keep stools a bit looser. What I would recommend is:
1. make sure you take fiber with diet: fruit and vegetables, at least 6-10 portions a day and reduce pasta, bread and junk food (fast food).
2. Take extra fiber daily (psillium), it will help with stools be softer
3. make sure you drink at least 1.5 L of water a day
4. be active during the day and even do exercises 3 times a week- it is found it improves bowel habits also.
5. If you are 50 years old and above and you have not done a
colonoscopy in the last 5-10 years you will need one. It a routine screening test to check for
colon cancer. If you had a relative with colon cancer at an earlier age than 50 than you might need to have the colonoscopy at an earlier age (sometimes they start at 25)- so speak with your doctor for the need of a routine colonoscopy at your age according to your family history and do what the doctor recommends on regards to it.
I hope this is helpful and answers to your question
Best regards
