Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been diagnosed with severe diverticulosis. I am not having an attack of diverticulitis currently so my gastroenterologist is not recommending a colonoscopy since I had one in 2014 and he recommended I have one in 2019 (5 yrs). However, a recent fecal occult blood test showed blood in the stool. Should I have a colonoscopy as soon as possible?
The occult blood in stool could be due to bacterial or parasitic infection of the colon. It doesn't warrant immediate colonoscopy. Your clinical correlation is needed and so kindly mention your clinical complaint to guide you further.
Sometimes occult blood test might be false positive due to the intake of peroxidase containing foods. So I suggest you repeat occult blood test and stool routine micro examination also.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Parth Goswami,
General & Family Physician
