What Causes Blood In Stool?

Hello, My husband has been experiencing blood in his stool periodically over the last several years. He thought it was spicy food and eliminated that from his diet. However symptoms have continued. He will get stomach cramps and then have diarrhea. He very rarely has a solid bowel movement. We think he may have a stomach ulcer. Can you shed some light on this? Thanks

Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic.

First, if your husband is aged over 50, he should do red blood count and occult blood stool to see if there is anemia present. If this is present then he must do both colonosocopy and gastroscopy to rule out some serious isses.

Second, if these tests are negative then the cause of bleeding is probably hemorrhoids, anal fissure or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with stool softener, diet and sitzbaths.

It is very important to take lot of fluids, probiotics, high fibre food and stool softeners to avoid hard stool and straining. If there is no improvement in next few weeks, then surgical management should be considered.

Otherwise, you can see if conservative therapy will help.
Also, if there is rapid weight loss, then coonosocpy must be done since this is nonspecific sign of possible tumors.

I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
