What Causes Bloody Diarrhea After An Enema Administration?

I gave myself an enema with a premixed saline solution from the store. It did not go in easily and I had to use small squeezes of fluid to help get the tube in and spray about 4 ounces in. I waited to feel the need to go and then got on the toilet. I felt the liquid from the enema come out and thought I was going diarreah but when I checked the toilet there was just bloody water. Is this normal?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Forceful thrusting of the cannula in rectum seems to have injured rectal blood vessels that possibly led to bleeding.

In such conditions, you need test/consultation of an anorectal surgeon for finding the site of bleeding with needful imaging investigation and specific management.

Thanks.
