What Causes Bloody Diarrhea, Fever And Vomiting In Infant?
Hello, I am a Microbiology student with a case study assignment. The case is a 4yr old female presents to the emergency room with bloody diarrhea fever and vomiting. Patient has had symptoms x24hrs with no urine production in that time. Hx: Pt. went on a field trip to the local fair grounds, went into a petting zoo and had a lunch of ground beef burgers, fries and milk. This trip was 4 days prior to symptoms. We have Labs of decrease in kidney function, lysed RBCs. Micro samples show Gram negative rod that grows in single arrangement. It is catalase positive and is a lactose fermenter with peritrichous. Also, patient has a temp of 39C. Is this disease e-coli? If not what is it? Thank You
The symptoms seem to be related to a gastroenteritis. I recommend to do a stool culture to detect the cause of the diarrhea. I also recommend to do a complete blood count. Meanwhile, I suggest to give the child liquids and electrolyte solution. I also recommend to use anti inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen to relieve the fever.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
