Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I ve been on chantix for the last few days however no one informed me to eat prior to taking chantix. Is this related to the bloody stools I ve had all day yesterday? All were bright red blood but the latest had the most blood & what even seemed to be dark blood as well. Please help
Chantix contains varenicline which is used together with a support program to help you stop smoking. The program will include counseling and educational materials. Less common side effects of Chantix are bloody stool, stomach pain or upset, vomiting of blood or material that looks like coffee grounds, black, tarry stool, usual bleeding or bruising, nosebleeds, cold sweats, nausea etc. Chantix can cause GIT bleeding which may cause bloody stools. Take this medication as directed by your doctor. Don't take more of it, don't take it more often and don't take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered. You might be told to take this medicine for about 12 weeks.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Zubayer Alam, General & Family Physician
