What Causes Bloody Stools?

Over the past 6 months, I have been having bright red blood in my stool. I am 38 years old, good shape. I use to drink very heavily when I was in high school and in the military. I do not drink a lot anymore, but when I drink its on the weekend and I usually tie one on. I notice that I bleed heavily for a couple of days and then its gone. I sometime have pain in my stomach and chest after a good binge drinking session as well. I have cut back my drinking drastically, do I just need to quit all together?
