What Causes Bloody Vomiting While Suffering From Hiatal Hernia?

I have a 92 year old mom. She is in the hospital now and under went a scoping today. The doctor is recommending hiatal hernia surgery. She has been vomiting some blood but none today. She is very frail and does not want any surgery. She was in extreme pain but that has subsided today. I want a second opinion and plan to get one. The doctor that was assigned to her case (Note: She was admitted Wed. Evening through emergency room). He says if she does not have surgery now it will happen again but the next time she has to go to the ER it will be emergency surgery. I guess my question is would you want your mother to have this operation at 92 years old? Her good pressure was very high but has now come down with IV medication. Her heart thus far is OK.

Answer: Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The first choice is to start using proton pump inhibitors, to prevent acid production.
Changing the diet can also reduce the symptoms. She has to avoid spicy foods, chocolate, foods made with tomatoes, caffeine, onions, citrus fruits, alcohol.
She should also avoid eating meals or snacks within a few hours of going to bed.
Surgery is not commonly recomended in hiatal hernia treatment.Considering her age and the hypertension, it is difficult to make a decision for surgery.
If medication and lifestyle changes don't wok, you can consider surgery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
