What Causes Blue Discoloration In Lips, Mouth, Feet And Hands Of A Toddler?
Hi, I am wondering what would cause toddlers lips, inside mouth and feet and hands to turn blueish in colour. He is still active and eats well. We do notice that his lips change colour more when he sits still and or is eating. Capillary refill is also slow... all the above symptoms are off and on but occur many times during the day.
It is suggestive of cyanosis. Cyanosis is a bluish color in the skin, lips and nail beds caused by a shortage of oxygen in the blood. Cyanosis occurs because blood with decreased oxygen turns blue or purple. This low-oxygen blood causes a blue-purple tint to the skin. The most common causes for this condition include a serious lung or heart problem such as cyanotic congenital heart disease. I advise you to take him for an urgent pediatric for further evaluation which may required an echocardiography to ascertain the diagnosis.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
