Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a UTI and was given an antibiotic SMZ/TMP 160MG Within 30 minutes after taking the first one, my whole body was itchy. Could I be allergic to this medicine? It is now 90 minutes later and the itching has subsided. Should I take another in the morning? Thank you
You have taken Sulphamethoxazole and Trimethoprim combination that is a sulfa containing antibiotic and sulfa drugs can commonly seen to cause allergic reaction.. Severe itching seems to be due to allergic reaction only.. You should not take next dose of antibiotic and consult your Physician.. You can be advised other antibiotics that are suitable for urinary tract infection like Norfloxacin, Nitrofurantoin etc.. If the allergy symptoms still persist take anti allergics like Levocetrizine..
Hope this helps..
Regards.
