Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Body Pain While Taking Eltroxin To Control TSH Level?
R/Sir,My wife TSH was 6.8 and dose of eletroxin has been increased from 25mcg to 50mcg. About six later i.e. now TSH has came down to 4.5 level.Should eletroxin 75mcg would be good for her as she has is feeling pain in body specially in morning, swelling in body etc.
TSH 4.5 mU/L is with in the normal range. Usually in well controlled hypothyroidism patient TSH remains around 3 to 4 mU/L, at which level almost all symptoms are in check. Since now it is at 4.5 mU/L, there is no reason to increase the dosage further. However, please check Anti TPO antibodies too, just to see if the cause is Hashimoto's Thyroiditis or what (HT).
In HT the TSH levels may be a bit varied. What are the T4 & T3 levels? If symptoms do continue to trouble then you may add 12.5 mcg per day (50 + 12.5 = 62.5 mcg) per day and then check TSH again after 6 weeks and also see if symptoms improve. TSH should not go below 0.5 mU/L as that will cause drug induced hyperthyroidism issue.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
