Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi I had a tooth extracted yesterday and the dentist gave me Clindamycin. I have broken out in hives and the dentist told me to stop taking it and get Benedryl. Which I've done. The benedryl seemed to help but when I took a second dose of it at 5:00 it doesn't seem to be helping. Now my lips are swelling. But I have no trouble breathing. Is this a reaction to the Clindamycin or the benedryl?
No, it is not a reaction to benadryl but it is due to allergic reaction to Clindamycin only that is causing the swelling of lips that is termed as Allergic Angioedema.. As the antibiotic Clindamycin can take for about 30-32 hours to get out of the body therefore the symptoms can continue to come and go till the medicine completely weans off from the body.. So my suggestion to you is to take Benadryl till the swelling resolves. You should also apply cool compresses over the lips and drink plenty of water so that the drug gets excreted from the body quickly and you get better soon.. In case if the swelling continues to worsen consult an Emergency room and get evaluated..
Hope this helps..
Regards.
