What Causes Body Rashes Along With Swelling And Redness On The Tongue?

My grandson has been getting sick for four days now. He has a headache off and on. Never a fever. As of yesterday he has a strawberry tongue and a rash on the upper part of his body. My daughter took him in and they thought he had Kawasaki disease and sent him to a different hospital but they ruled that out there and basically sent him home with no diagnosis and told my daughter to just make sure and monitor his temp. He continues to get sick and not keep anything down. His tongue is still the same and is even a little more swollen!.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Strawberry tongue and rash are symptoms that prompt us towards Kawasaki and it is good they have ruled it out. Another condition that might cause similar findings is scarlet fever but the child should have fever as the name indicates. So as long as the child is not developing fever than very likely the symptoms are due to a viral infection and it is self limiting. It is important to keep the child hydrated, give him oral rehydration solutions and if he can't keep them you will need to send him to the hospital to evaluate him if he is dehydrated and if he needs intravenous fluids. If fever develops than scarlet fever seems very likely and proper treatment is needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
