What Causes Bowel Incontinence And UTI With History Of Spinal Cord Injury?

My son is a 31 year old quadriplegic as a result of a c4-c5 spinal cord injury at the age of 17. This last week he as had several bowel accidents (not during his routine bowel program). It has had a mushy consistency but this morning it was very loose with some mucus and lots of gas. At the same time his stomach has been extremely distended especially right before an accident. He also will feel nauseated at times along with a low grade of about 100.0 to 100.5. This is Another condition which is his chronic UTIs. Lately he has lots of sediment in his urine so much that it s been clogging his suprapubic tube . He is scheduled to have a cystoscope in a few days. A few weeks ago an ultrasound showed a nickel size kidney stone but his urologist doesn t think it needs to be removed. I don t think the conditions are related but just wanted to let you know, just in case. What do you think all the bowel issues (lots odd loose bowels, gas, extreme bloating, nauseating and fever ) could be?

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Spinal cord injury at the level of C4-C5 can be the cause of chronic UTI. However, loose stools, gas, nausea and vomiting are probably due to gastrointestinal tract infection. These symptoms are not likely to be due to spinal cord injury.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
