What Causes Breathing Difficulty After Swallowing A Piece Of Chicken?

My girlfriend accidentally swallowed a piece of chicken, but she s almost certain it went down the her airpipe and not her throat. She is very short of breath and had periods of difficulty breathing, and she can feel pressure under her sternum. However, there is no coughing. What should we do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic forum. I understand your concerns.
You need to see doctor if symptoms persist and do ENT examination and lung xrays. It may cause some serious issues such as pneumonia or bronchitis so it should be evaluated. However, in most cases food goes down to stomach and what she feels may be just a irritation due to passage of hard food through esophagus . So give her more fluids, yoghurt and piece of bread and it may help. I am sure it will resolve soon, but in every case, it would be good to see doctor.
I hope I have answered your query.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
