What Causes Breathing Difficulty Along With Vomiting And Chills?

My friend had about 4 to 5 drinks last night. Today, he has been breathing heavy, vomiting and having chills. This morning, I though he was having tremors. But he is conscious and able to walk. Said he felt better after the last vomit. Do you think it s a bad hangover or possible alcohol poisoning. We were headed to the emergency room, but he vomited on the way and said he was starting to feel better.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.
I appreciate your concern.

Because the symptoms described above, this condition called alcohol intoxication.

The person did not eat before drinking, because he had a drink at 4 o'clock.
In this case drinking alcohol has caused hypoglycemia.
Several alterations in the metabolic state of the liver and other organs occur in response to the presence of alcohol in the body and can result in low blood sugar levels (low glucose levels, or hypoglycemia)
Because glucose is the primary energy source of the brain, hypoglycemia can contribute to hangover symptoms such as weakness, chills and tremors.
Hard alcohol drinks irritate the stomach lining, leading to inflammation (gastritis). Moreover, pancreatic secretion is stimulated and intestinal activity increased. These effects taken together can contribute to the nausea, and vomiting.
Alcohol depresses the nerves that control involuntary actions like breathing. Alcohol can cause breathing problems.

Such complaints require medical care because they may be life-threatening.

Kind regards.
