What Causes Breathing Difficulty At Night?

I am having trouble breathing at night. I fall asleep and get maximally 5 hours of sleep before I wake up and struggle with breathing. When I wake, I can t get enough air and I am more aware of my breathing. This started in December and has continued. While all signs point to sleep apnea, this seems like more. I am a side sleeper and feel like I need to turn to the other side to aid my breathing.
