What Causes Breathing Difficulty While Suffering From Severe Cough?

I have 4 year old twins who had some sicknesses about 6 weeks ago. My sons strep throat got me sick and i got a lingering cough from it. I was given amoxicillin 500mg 2x day for 10 days. The cough is now a 1 on a scale of 1-10. my experience is that i cannot get the oxygen through my nose that i need when i breathe or that my lungs are possibly tight. i have hx of hay fever as a child. i am 40 years old and smoked cigars in my 30s. i haven t smoked in 6 months. I ve never had breathing issues. no drug/alchohol hx with exception of cigars.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I think you are experiencing nasal congestion, and possible pneumonia. You need to get checked by your caring doctor to rule it out. Meanwhile, I advise to take:
- Nasal decongestant
- Mucolytics
- Apply cold balm at bedtime at night
- Gargle with warm water and salt
- Antihistaminic at bedtime

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
