Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Breathing Difficulty While Walking When Diagnosed With Atrial Fibrillation?
In the last two to three years I am not able to walk any distance. After a block I have to stop and wait to get my breath. I have had tests which didn t show anything. I do have AFib of the heart. I am a little over weight and just turned 70. Not being able to walk and do the things I would like is making my life very difficult. I get tired very easly but the worst is not able to go for a walk or climb any stairs. I do not have a cough and do not smoke. I do get wiezie at times.
As your age is 70 with history of atrial fibrillation and difficulty in walking and climbing stairs do indicate cardiac cause most likely. A lower side ejection fraction, compensated heart hypertrophy from age related changes or others do contribute to the above mentioned symptoms.
In my clinic, I do recommend following line of investigations after thorough clinical examination: - Complete hemogram (anemia may be second most important reason) - Fasting blood sugar - X-ray chest (PA) - EKG - 2 D echo - Tread mill test - With or without angiography
If you have any of the reports available with you, kindly share with me during follow up discussion.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
