What Causes Breathing To Stop In Sleep?

My spouse said I stopped breathing in my sleep last night & my legs were shaking. He shook me and i started breathing again. I didn t wake up I don t think. If I did I don t remember it. This never happened before & I m so afraid it s sleep apnea. Can it just be a one time thing or is it always sleep apnea?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello

I would like to suggest you:
1. Oximetry
2. Electroencephalography
3. Blood Pressure
4. Serum Ferritin
5. Fasting Blood Sugar
6. Kidney Function Test.

Maybe a little more, but, I suggest you do these tests.
Meanwhile, you should do the followings:
exercising, stretching or massaging your legs, or taking a hot bath may bring relief. Lifestyle changes also may help, especially following a balanced diet and avoiding caffeine, alcohol and cigarette smoking. Iron treatment may be helpful, even when there is no evidence of iron deficiency.

You can also use continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device It forces your airways open with a stream of air. This allows you to breathe more easily.
Losing weight may be helpful in some cases.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dipan Samanta, General & Family Physician
