What Causes Breathlessness Along With Swelling In Feet And Ankles?

My stepfather- 77 was in the hospital on Halloween for breathing issues. The next day when i went to take him home, both of his feet were swollen and he has bruises on his feet, heels, and ankles. We don t know why. We doubled his lasix for 4 days- he has been resting- using crutches. We ice his feet and keep them elevated. It has been 12 days. The swelling has gone down-not gone. His ankles and feet are very bruised and he can only stand on them for about 5 min before he is a lot of pain. Should I still be applying heat and ice? Should he get them x-rayed?
