Help please.. I've noticed over the last few yes that when I walk up 1-2 flights of stairs I get extremely breathless !!! Initially I put it down to previous smoking history ( 25 pk yr), however I had some lung functions done it didn't pick up any lung problems .. I am a very fit 43 yr old women who does 5 exercise classes weekly.. Spinning, body pump ect... My heart rate at peak exercise about 20 mins in is about 160-175. Resting HR is about 78, however walking up 1-2 flights stairs it rises to about 150 and I become very breathless ??? What could be going on ??
HI Well come to HCM Chances of exercise induced or exertion induce asthma, some time this could be due to low hemoglobin and this need to be confirmed, for safe side cardiac evaluation test is necessary, this would rule out some cardiac disease, hope this information helps, take care have a nice day.
Dear patient, What you may be suffering from is an INTERSTITIAL LUNG DISEASE. Though there are varieties of this disorder, the basic problem is that in long stnding cases of smoking the lung architecture gets stiffened, which is unable to take the burden of liftting your body weight above ground level. In such case, even the pulmonary function tests also come as normal. The best way to tackle this situation is to keep yourself well hydrated and climb stairs gradually taking deep breaths. Although since you exercise a lot, you have a good cardiac reserve, so I wouldnot like to suspect a heart problem, though an electrocardiogram and chest xray PA view to see your cardiac status would only help our diagnosis further.
