Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Bright Red Menstruation While On Depo Provera Injection?
Good day, I am on the Depo-provera injection and have been constantly for 2 years now. I started menstruating 2 weeks ago, its extreme and bright red. My GP says it is to be expected but I am not convinced. I have checked all the normal miscarriage signs just in case but none apply.
Depo provera is a commonly used injection to protect against pregnancy but the most common side effect of it is bleeding which may be irregular and or heavy.
It can happen to have this due to depo provera, on the other hand you will need to have a gynecological examination to make sure this is the case. If you have not had a pap test in the last 2-3 years you might need one and also if you are over 35 years of age you will need a vaginal ultrasound to rule out uterine masses or thickness of the uterine inner layer (endometrial hypertrophy). The doctor might need to do tests for sexually transmitted disease if he finds local tenderness and redness or secretions with odor.
If you think you are bleeding heavily for many days you might also need to do a CBC to make sure you are not developing anemia due to blood loss.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards, Dr. Antoneta Zotaj General & Family Physician
