Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Bright Red Patch On The Face And Arms For A 5 Year Old Having Fever And Cough?
5-year-old with fever and cough has developed what looks like a bright red sunburn on face, arms, and torso. I know it is not a sunburn because we live in Michigan and it is still snowing. She has had no new soaps or detergents. No body at home or at school has a rash.
Viral infections with a rash are common in this age group. One particular virus may cause a facial rash that is called a "slapped face appearance." Your daughter may have this virus. Most of the viral infections with rash in children get better in a short while. If she does not improve quickly or gets worse, you should have her see the pediatrician. This doctor may be able to tell which virus is causing the rash just by looking at it. He or she can also check for strep throat which can sometimes cause a rash that looks like a sunburn. Strep often occurs with fever but not usually with a cough. Treatment with an antibiotic is necessary if she has strep.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
