What Causes Bright Red Vaginal Spotting And Abdominal Cramps During Periods?

Hello, i wanted to see if someone could give me a general idea of what may be happening and if i should go to the ER. I started my period on the 15th which was 3 days late. The bleeding was light and only lasted a couple days. Well this morning i noticed a bright red/pink spotting and around 4pm or so started getting cramps, severe pain in my mid stomach area and sharp pains on my right side by my boob as well on top. Well the severe stomach pain had been coming and going often and about an hr ago i passed a bloodclot that had some kind of clear tissue attached that floated up as the clot was did not float. What could this most likely be and do ineed to go to the ER? My stomach and lower abdomen feel very sore .Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I would advise you to have a pregnancy test. Because you had a delay in your periods with a few days, and now having irregular bleeding, pregnancy needs to be ruled out. If the pregnancy test is negative, then just keep an eye on the bleeding. You do not need to necessarily go to the ER. If the bleeding is getting much heavier than a normal period or lasts more than 10 days, or your pain is worse it is best to see a doctor soon. If the pregnancy test is positive, then this can be a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy, so a visit with the doctor is needed soon and in this case, even going to ER is justified if you have cramps, bleeding and a positive pregnancy test, to rule out an ectopic pregnancy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
